Janie's Nursery

Phew!! The nursery is finally finished!! I could probably organize the closet a bit more, but I am done for now. I will have plenty else to do before she arrives like say, pack my hospital bag??!!?!

With having a toddler and working full-time and the holidays approaching, getting Janie's nursery together was not as easy as I had hoped.

We were very quick to clean out the room and get it "ready" for making into a nursery, but everything else was a little slow.

We had a few big decisions to make! We debated getting a toddler bed for Nora and moving the crib into the new nursery to try and avoid having two cribs, but eventually decided that we would just get another crib. We also decided that we would not be getting an additional changing table. I have had an offer for one as a give-away and I think I'm going to take them up on it for convenience, but we figured we would just make do with one changing pad until Nora is out of diapers.

Once we figured out WHAT we were going to do with the furniture and colors and such, then we needed to start getting the big furniture in place. We had a couple of projects and ordered crib and a rug and just recently moved the recliner into the new nursery, replacing it with a newly covered glider in Nora's room. Thankfully, she hasn't had any issues with the chair being replaced. She still wants to rock in the glider, but does not act as if she has to have the chair that has been in her room the last 15 months of her life!

So... bit by bit we began to get things together. I've been able to focus more on the nursery now that the holidays are over and am finished with working and long-term sub-planning. I repurposed a bunch of old frames and decorative accessories to get the room together. I really only had to buy a few things to add to the decor I already had stashed away.

Walking into the nursery.
The blanket my mom knit and gave to Janie for
Christmas is waiting patiently for her!!

Imagine a changing table pad there...
I refinished this dresser that we got off of Craigs List for $100.
It's a really solid piece of furniture!

Janie's crib. I just painted her name on a piece of mat board
from Hobby Lobby and stuck it in a frame we already had.
Lots easier than trying to find a print that would fit into that huge poster frame!

Justin's old toy chest that we repainted and put a cushion on top of.
I am also really enjoying the digital prints that I got off of Etsy and printed at Staples!

After much searching and contemplating, I decided to make my own artwork.
Bought a huge canvas and painted some flowers on it.
It's not perfect, but it does add more to that corner of the room!

The changing table!

I am pretty happy with how it turned out! I am glad that Janie didn't decide to come a few weeks early because she wouldn't have had a complete room. I know that it would have been okay, but gosh it feels SO much better to have it done!!

Now, the only thing left will be to put some sweet pictures of the baby girl into all those frames I have on the shelves. Can't wait!!!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas 2013!!

Our sweet little family in Christmas jammies!

It's hard to believe how much has changed since last Christmas...

Christmas 2012

Nora was just a little munchkin. I can't even remember what kind of a schedule we were on then. I do remember that Christmas Day last year was the last time I ever nursed her. Funny the things that stick in your memory...

This year has been so much fun, though. Nora has been a joy to watch grow from a little tiny nugget to an almost-running-everywhere toddler! She has so much personality. Our Christmas Day was great!

Look what Santa brought for me!!

We started out the day at home, listening to Christmas music and opening gifts by the tree after a light breakfast-snack.

Nora's favorite part was ripping off the paper & bows!

Nora was so excited that Santa came to visit her and that he enjoyed the cookies that we made for him on Christmas Eve! (My mom Aunt Vickie's recipe... yum!)

Santa came!!

He brought her a gem of a kitchen that some little elf worked super hard to design and another little elf worked super hard to put together in the months leading up to Christmas. We can only imagine that it looked something like this before... (no before picture - oops!)

A similar old kitchen...

Nora's snazzy new one!!

Nora opened up her gifts from mommy & daddy and then we had a big yummy breakfast with the Eures!

Oooh!

After nap time, we went to my parents' house for our last Christmas celebration. There were LOTS of gifts and we had a great time! Nora was really, really well behaved, considering the number of dogs present, and we went home feeling very blessed.

Our growing family!

Helping retrieve bows. She is a good helper!

We are looking forward to our next special little gift - baby Janie!

Christmas Eve

I loved how well Christmas went this year. Nora was a cutie and we had a great time with both sides of the family.

My cutie on Christmas Eve!

On Christmas Eve, Justin's family came over for dinner and festive drinks as well as a gift exchange.

Having a great time with mommy!

Grandpa was taking most of the pictures so I hope he got some good ones to share!!

Reading "The Night Before Christmas" with
Grandma in her Christmas Eve jammies!

We left out milk & cookies for Santa and our stockings are hung by the chimney with care, so hopefully things go well for us on Christmas morning...

Pre-Christmas Fun

It only makes sense to have lots and lots of Christmas music & festivities before Christmas itself! We have been enjoying Christmas at the Peipert house for SURE.

Oooooh!

I enjoyed watching Nora's class sing "Jingle Bells" at their holiday music performance, even though she did not do as we practiced (nor did any of them, really!!).

Hi jingle baby!

We have been rocking the holiday garb for the last few weeks.

Hopefully Santa still loves me after I screamed at him!

Some giggles never hurt!

We have been snuggling and trying to watch as many Christmas movies as we can. (Okay, this hasn't happened THAT much but I wish it happened more!)

Snack time and Christmas movies!

We enjoyed dinner and spending time with cousin Hunter at Grandma and Grandpa's house the weekend before Christmas! We exchanged gifts and had a great time!

Oh, presents you say??

Opening gifts!

Check out my new slide! Thanks Grandma & Grandpa!

Playing the piano with Auntie J and cousin Hunter.

We are looking forward to Christmas!

Seeing Santa

We went to see Santa this year at the same place we went last year, a sweet little toy shop in Southlake called The Owl's Nest.

The official Santa picture for 2013!

My terrified little babe.

Last year I tried to go see Santa at North Park (along with everyone else) and ended up leaving with nothing. I gave this Santa a try and LOVED it. It was super easy to get to him and I could take my own pictures. Plus Nora loved him so that was definitely a perk!

Nora with Santa last Christmas.

She loved his beard!!

This year it was a little bit more hectic, but it was still a good experience (for me, at least...). We took our number and proceeded to play with some of the toys in the back of the store while we waited for our turn. It worked out GREAT having something for her to do while we waited!

Playing with Mimi at The Owl's Nest.

Workin' on the work bench.

They also had a live reindeer there that day for kids to check out, so we did. And Nora HATED it. I guess I'm not surprised since she is in a bit of a phase right now where she really doesn't like animals that she doesn't recognize. I guess it's part of her slightly apprehensive personality.

Reindeer!
In case you're wondering - stuffed reindeer, equally as frightening...

I figured that she would probably not enjoy Santa so much this year, for that reason specifically, and I was right. She wanted NOTHING to do with him. The people at The Owl's Nest and Santa knew just what to do, but it didn't make it any easier. Nora didn't want off of my lap and Santa had to basically sneak up behind her to get a decent shot.

This may have been when they pulled out the stuffed reindeer...

Mom, please don't let him near me!!

Either way, it was a fun experience that we just had to do! I think Santa still plans on bringing Nora gifts but we will see!

Snow Days and Sonograms

Last Thursday we had an ice storm blow in which brought lovely sleet to Texas. School got cancelled for Friday morning before we even went to bed, so the alarm was turned OFF.

Friday morning, I woke up and saw beautiful white snow covering everything. Except it wasn't actually snow. It was a thick layer of ice. That's what happens, all you people up north who think that we are being "wussies" or whatever. Ice covers everything. And then there are absolutely no methods available for getting it off of things except for good old-fashioned sunlight and warmer temperatures.

Daddy & Nora in the ice.

So... Nora's doctor appointment was rescheduled for Monday, as the doctor's office closed as well as the schools and other businesses.

Then Monday got cancelled as well! We both had appointments scheduled, so both little ladies got checked up on! And the big bonus was that it was stress-free and I was able to take Nora myself to her appointment.

I put Nora's stats in her own post, but I wanted to update on Miss Janie too!

Janie's sweet little face... can you find it?!?!?
This pic was actually from 2 weeks ago, but it's a better picture...

Basically I am to the point now where I am getting checked weekly and so I know that I am not dialated yet and everything seems to be all good and fine. They think she weighs about 4 pounds and 11 ounces, as of 2 weeks ago.

Christmas shopping has consumed all of my funds this month, so the nursery is still not so much ready to go. The only additional projects I have worked on is a little bit of organization in the closet and the glider chair cushion that is actually going into Nora's room so that we can switch out the comfy recliner to the nursery.

A new cushion cover!

Thanks Marty & Peggy for the chair! Nora loves to be rocked, so it will be SO nice to still have a chair in her room for that.

So now we have a rug, a crib, a dresser, curtains, and a chair. A room of furniture but not really a "room" yet. I'll (hopefully) get there!

School is back on for tomorrow after our THIRD day at home, so we are going to turn the alarm ON, bundle up and brave the cold from here on out! At least until Christmas vacation...

Baby, it's cold outside!

Fifteen Months

It has been an interesting few days, but Nora finally had her fifteen month check up today with her doctor...

Don't you wait for your doctor in your undies, moccasins, and with a good book??

We determined that she is a very healthy, growing baby and there seem to be absolutely no concerns at this point! Except a looming cold, I'm afraid... but that will go away with time.

WEIGHT: 23 pounds
HEIGHT: 31 inches

She is on the tall side with a healthy height to weight ratio. Yay for my big girl!

Reading with daddy!

I am sitting here thinking about how I can't even remember what I wrote for her twelve month post because it has been THAT long and I am excited to see what it was because she has changed THAT much.

Our first shopping cart car experience.

Nora has really grown into some personality. We joke about how now she is opinionated and we kinda-sorta wish that maybe she would have less opinions sometimes! But it's true... she now has an opinion about what she wants to eat and whether or not she wants to do certain things and she has learned that she can say "no" and use it correctly... Oh my, toddlerhood.

Nora using her new word - "no"

An appropriate shirt.

So here are the updates from twelve months:

waves hello & goodbye Well, yes we still do this, but selectively of course. Nora is hesitant to wave hello to people she doesn't know and is very happy to wave goodbye to just about anyone. I was pleasantly surprised last week while at daycare she hopped straight into her teacher's arms and waved goodbye to me. So happy! When I say that it is time to go, she gets herself all ready by the garage door so that we can go to the car. Then, she waves goodbye to Ford, like we do every time we leave the house. So she definitely waves on her own in appropriate situations!

My girl!

talks & "sings" Nora is doing a little less singing these days, but she sure does try and talk a lot more. She has quite a few words that she says on a regular basis (food words and commands for the most part) and she also has started to imitate when prompted. We were looking at our Christmas tree and elf and I was telling her what they were and each time I did, she would repeat "fff" (for elf) or "ttt" (for tree). It's pretty incredible! Check out her list of words below...

Nora saying "uh oh" (one of her favorites)

signs "more," "eat," "all done," "up" and "help" Nora has learned a LOT more signs as well. It's kind of awesome because she doesn't get upset nearly as much because she can tell us what she needs through either signing or plain old pointing. She still cries, don't get me wrong, but it sure is nice to have her be able to TELL us what she needs (sometimes...) They've been working on signing at "school" too, so sometimes I feel like she knows more than I do! She also brings home little picture cards of different signs and we put them up on the fridge to practice.

From October!

points to specific things Nora is doing a lot of pointing these days. When she needs help with something, she signs "help" and then points. When she wants to eat something, she signs "eat" (or "help") and then points. When she wants to know what something is, she points and says "eh?" (or some random vowel sound that sounds like a question). She knows that is a tool to help her get what she wants or needs, that's for sure! She knows other gestures, too like "where" and blowing kisses.

Nora has been loving these shape sorters! She needs help quite a bit though...

How does she come up with these things??

plays & dances Nora loves music! She will dance when prompted, but she really likes to play on a piano. Sometimes we play the actual piano and sometimes we play one on the iPad, but either way she likes to doodle around with the keys. We listen to her music in the car sometimes and she likes to dance with me there. Her class did "Jingle Bells" for their holiday carol "show" and Nora's little face lit up when I would sing it. She shook her little hands (like ringing bells) and got very excited. She also has a little bear that recites nursery rhymes that she likes to listen to and sing her "Twinkle Twinkle" song to.

In her dancing shirt from Auntie K, playing with her magnets.

Silly baby...

walks pretty well Nora is walking VERY well now. She walks all over the place. She practically runs sometimes. She does still fall, especially if she doesn't pay attention or if she has shoes on or something, but she is a full-on big girl walker. She even tries to go up and down the stairs on her feet. UGH. Don't like that.

Sleepy girl after daycare.

stands alone The girl does lots more on her own than stand now! She likes to help us get her dressed and undressed each day. She likes to brush her own teeth. She will go and find certain toys and objects around the house. She will bring us things when asked (sometimes - this has also become a "Chase Me" game on occasion). She's not the most independent child (at least for mommy) but she definitely KNOWS a whole lot.

Brushing her teeth!

eats finger foods Nora has been eating pretty well. They say she is a good eater at school, though like I said before, she seems to be pretty opinionated about what she eats at home. I figure that if she doesn't want to eat, she must not be that hungry, though. Of course now she has opinions about WHERE she eats, too. For the most part, meals are in her chair. Last night, she was insistent upon eating her dinner while in my lap, sitting on my chair. Don't know why. She did have shots done, but other than that, can't explain it. She likes to eat her snack now sitting on the couch. We sit and snuggle at snack time sometimes. Nora has also become opinionated about WHAT she wants to eat. For example, cheese. Cheese all the time. "Chh" she will say, when we open the door to the fridge. Every time. I've had to limit her cheese intake! Well, I guess we know she is my child. And the pantry. Yesterday she pulled out all the fig bars. She likes to help herself in the pantry, which can cause some disagreements. We just keep working through them!

Nora trying to eat with her spoon. Most likely, unsuccessfully.

Mom, let me in here.

I will help myself...

drinks milk from a bottle We're completely off the bottle now. The transition was not too bad. She was in the infant room until mid-October at daycare and so she was on it until around then, when it was easier to make a clean break because I wasn't bringing in her food. She wasn't super thrilled about it at first, especially before bed, but she accepted it after a couple of days. We were using a cup with a silicone spout so it wasn't too different, really. I've actually stopped measuring her milk so I don't know how much she takes in, but she gets offered milk at meals and snacks. She drinks it up before bed time, that's for sure!

Snack time snuggles.

drinks water from a cup We have Nora drinking out of big girl sippy cups now! She switches back and forth between water and milk throughout the day, but we are still laying low on the juice since she doesn't seem to have a problem drinking her fluids. It has been so nice to only have a few different bottles to wash at home. It's going to be an adjustment to having to wash 6 bottles a day in a few weeks...

Our child has a head full of hear! Must wear ponies!

has 4 teeth Nora had an awful couple weeks where teeth kept appearing all over the place so now she has 10. She has all four of her first molars, four teeth on top, and still just two on the bottom. I expect that two more will pop up on the bottom eventually, but I have yet to see them!

You can kind of see those bottom molars in this picture!

The girl is growing! I just can't believe how quickly.

Words Nora says:

"mama" - Mommy
"dada" - Daddy
"aaa duuuu" - all done
''aaa duuuu" - up (no idea why)
"chhhh" - cheese
"caca" - cracker
"shhhh" - shoe
"oh oh" - uh oh
"ooo" - ew
"wooh" - woah
"caa caa" - quack quack/duck

Words Nora signs:

all done
up
help
more
milk
eat

car
dog
bird
duck
potato
mouse

diaper
potty
book
hands
eye
